Ei minusta USA:n vaalitavassa ole mitään monimutkaista. Se on tehty suojaamaan pienempien kun osavaltioiden vaikutusvaltaa. Vähän vastaava oli ennen "uutta EU-perustuslakia". Tarvittiin kaikkien jäsenten suostumus. Nyt se korvattiin enemmistöpäätöksillä.
Vaalitapa on sinällään hyvin yksinkertainen kun edes paikallisia enemmistöjä ei edellytetä. Tulos saadaan aina kertaäänestyksellä.
Vaikeus tulee lähinnä ennustettavuuden puolella kun gallupeilla mitataan täysin epäolennaisia asioita kuten ehdokkaiden valtakunnallista kannatusta ja tehdään vääriä johtopäätöksiä.

Muistan kyllä hyvin, kun Suomessakin äänestettiin valitsijamiehillä. Ja kerran äänetkin meinasi mennä tasan, sitä en kyllä muista.
Voi se Amerikassakin käydä niin, että kongressi päättää.

Yhdysvaltojen presidentinvaalit ovat suomalaisesta näkökulmasta monimutkaista seurattavaa. Osin tämä johtuu väärinkäsityksestä.
Suomalaiset ovat tottuneet valtakunnalliseen presidentinvaaliin. USA:ssa presidentti kuitenkin valitaan 51 vaaleissa, jotka järjestään 50 osavaltiossa sekä pääkaupunki Washingtonissa.
Mikäli vaaleja haluaa ymmärtää, on huomio keskitettävä osavaltioihin.
Äänestäjät eivät valitse suoraan presidenttiä vaan osavaltioiden 538 valitsijamiestä, jotka suorittavat presidentin lopullisen valinnan 19. joulukuuta.
Valituksi tullakseen presidenttiehdokas tarvitsee taakseen enemmistön eli vähintään 270 valitsijamiestä. Jos enemmistön kerääminen ei yhdeltäkään ehdokkaalta onnistu, presidentin valitsee Yhdysvaltain kongressin edustajainhuone.
Kukin osavaltio saa valitsijamiehiä väkilukunsa mukaisesti. Väkiluvultaan suurin osavaltio on Kalifornia, jolla on 55 valitsijamiestä. Pienimpien osavaltioiden aseman turvaamiseksi niille on taattu vähintään kolme valitsijamiestä, vaikka niiden väkiluku ei siihen oikeuttaisi.
Perussääntö on, että eniten ääniä saanut ehdokas saa taakseen kyseisen osavaltion kaikki valitsijamiehet. Tähän on kuitenkin kaksi poikkeusta, Nebraska ja Maine, jossa valitsijamiehet voivat jakautua usean ehdokkaan taakse.
Kimurantti järjestelmä aiheuttaa muun muassa sen, ettei presidentiksi valittava ehdokas välttämättä saa taakseen valtakunnallista äänten enemmistöä. Ääritapauksessa voi käydä jopa niin, ettei 75 prosenttia äänistä saanut ehdokas tule valituksi.
Kaikki osavaltiot eivät myöskään ole tuloksen tai kampanjoinnin kannalta yhtä tärkeitä.
Monissa osavaltioissa jompikumpi pääpuolueista on kannatukseltaan niin vahva, että lopputulos on käytännössä ennakkoon tiedossa. Esimerkiksi Kalifornia on vahvasti demokraattienemmistöinen ja Oklahoma puolestaan käytännössä varmasti republikaaniehdokkaan takana.
Yleensä kampanjointi keskittyy osavaltioihin, joissa puolueiden voimasuhteet ovat tasaväkiset. Nytkin kampanjan keskiössä on ollut esimerkiksi Florida, joka on merkittävä myös kokonsa vuoksi. Siellä jaossa on 29 valitsijamiestä.

Suomessa ei aina huomata sitä, että samanaikaisesti presidentin valinnan kanssa äänestetään lukemattomista muistakin asioista.
Valittavana ovat kaikki Yhdysvaltain kongressin edustajainhuoneen 435 jäsentä ja kolmasosa senaattoreista. Vaikka Yhdysvaltain presidentillä on laajat valtaoikeudet, lainsäädäntövalta on pääosin kongressin käsissä. Niinpä kongressin vaalit ovat vähintään yhtä tärkeät kuin presidentinvaalit.
Lisäksi kansalaiset äänestävät kuvernööristä 12 osavaltiossa, parlamentista 44 osavaltiossa ja pormestareista useissa kaupungeissa. Useiden osavaltioiden äänestäjät ottavat kantaa myös muun muassa marihuanan laillistamiseen ja aselakeihin.
Eri osavaltioissa elävien amerikkalaisten äänestyslipukkeet voivat siis näyttää todella erilaisilta. SK kaivoi kolme esimerkkiä: Alabaman osavaltiosta Cherokeesta, Pohjois-Dakotasta Bismarckista ja Texasin osavaltiosta (kyse on mallikappaleesta, jossa paikallisvaalien kohdat ovat tyhjiä).
Eroa on myös esimerkiksi siinä, äänestetäänkö sähköisesti vai paperilla, millaiset säännöt määrittävät ennakkoäänestystä ja onko äänestyslipukkeessa mainittu vain presidenttiehdokkaan, vai myös tämän valitsijamiesten nimet. Edes äänioikeuden saaminen ei onnistu samalla tavalla eri osavaltioissa.

Vaaleja ja niiden kampanjaa on jo tähän mennessä kuvattu poikkeuksellisiksi. Vaikka Hillary Clinton on pysynyt johdossa lähes kaikissa mielipidemittauksissa, monet ennakoivat vaalista tiukkaa.
Clintonin voittoa ovat ennustaneet sekä monet tiedotusvälineet että tutkijat. Myös Donald Trumpin voittoa on jo pitkään pidetty mahdollisena, vaikka hänen kampanjansa on ehditty jo useaan kertaan tuomita kuolleeksi.
Mikäli kaikki sujuu kuten pitää, eivätkä esimerkiksi vuoden 2000 vaalien kaltaiset ääntenlaskennan epäselvyydet toistu, presidentinvaalien tuloksen pitäisi olla selvillä Suomen aikaa keskiviikkoaamuna 9. marraskuuta. Suomen Kuvalehti raportoi tuloksista tuoreeltaan verkkosivuillaan.
Vaalien tuloslähetyksiä voit seurata internetin välityksellä jo tiistain ja keskiviikon välisenä yönä esimerksiksi CNN:n välityksellä. Lisäksi Yle Areena lähettää televisioyhtiö CBS:n tuloslähetyksen.

Vaalijärjestelmän periaatteet ja käytännön toteutus ovat tietenkin kaksi eri asiaa. Suomalainen systeemihän on monella tapaa nerokkaan yksinkertainen ja ulkomaiset käytännöt näyttäytyvät usein varsin erikoisina. Itse vierastan jenkkisysteemissä ennen kaikkea sitä ettei edes osavaltiotasolla edellytetä äänten enemmistöä. Tuon asian korjaaminen tietysti edellyttäisi toisen äänestyskierroksen järjestämistä.
Tyypillisesti tuohon otettaisiin kaksi eniten ääniä saanutta kuten Suomen pressanvaalissa. Ongelmaksi asia muodostuu silloin kun mukana on kahden vahvan sijasta kolme ehdokasta. Esimerkiksi Ross Perot sekoitti aikanaan tehokkaasti koko vaalin noin 20% kannatuksellaan ja muutti sen lähinnä lottoarvonnaksi kun kumpikaan ehdokkaista ei tainnut saada äänten enemmistöä kuin yhdessä tai kahdessa osavaltiossa. Eli yksinkertainen ei tarkoita myöskään oikeudenmukaista tai meidän näkövinkkelistämme demokraattista mutta vahvuutena on se että tulos saadaan aina kertalaakista mikäli tekninen osuus vain onnistuu.
Ihan samalla tavalla jenkit ihmettelevät meikäläisen järjestelmän outouksia kuten yleistä ja yhtäläistä äänioikeutta ilman paikoin työläitä ja monimutkaisia rekisteröitymisiä sekä äänioikeuden mielivaltaisen eväämisen mahdollisuutta. Meidän järjestelmämme lienee liian ennalta arvaamaton kun jokainen ehdot täyttävä halukas voi vain mennä äänestämään eikä esimerkiksi vastapuolta todennäköisesti äänestävää huonoa ainesta saada pelattua pois äänioikeutettujen luetteloista.

This is big news. Usually in major operations like this one, the administration would alert top congressional leaders of both parties. Trump chose not to do that. "The House must be briefed on this raid, which the Russians but not top Congressional Leadership were notified of in advance, and on the Administration's overall strategy in the region," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (California) said in a statement.
18. "This is the biggest one perhaps that we've ever captured, because this is the one that built ISIS and beyond, and was looking to rebuild it again."
Even when it comes to capturing or killing terrorists, Trump has to be the biggest and the best. "The biggest one perhaps that we've ever captured."

This is Trump's defense of his "Something very big has just happened!" tweet at 9:23 p.m., Eastern time on Saturday night. Worth noting: Trump plays golf at least once virtually every weekend.

Mielestäni ei lainkaan mahdotonta.
Jos katselee uutisia, kertomuksia ja kuvauksia mitä tapahtui ennen Osaman nappaamista niin hyvin samankaltaiselta al-Baghdadin pakoilu vaikutti. Siellä on reursseja, uskollisia apulaisia, täydellinen viestiliikennekuri ja lähitulevaisuuden suunnitelmien ennakoimaton muuttelu. Syyria on tyystin sekasortoisessa tilassa, mielestäni valtioiden tietämättömyys on uskottavaa.
Se ei silti tarkoita, etteikö olinpaikkaa olisi voitu tietää ehkä jo jonkun aikaa ja ajoituksella esim. singauttaa pressanvaalikampanja vauhdikkaaseen alkuun.
