Korean Orders - The Armaments Agency reveals details
On the YouTube channel "WoW - Wolski o Wojnie" on July 24 this year. a conversation between an analyst dealing with the army and defense, Jarosław Wolski, with the press spokesman of the Armaments Agency, Lt. Col. Krzysztof Płatek, was published, during which a lot of detailed information was revealed about the plans for the technical modernization of the Polish Armed Forces, and in particular the scope of framework agreements that are planned to be signed next week (probably on July 27 this year) .) with companies from South Korea. Below we present the most important information provided during this conversation.
The main assumption of the activities undertaken by the Armaments Agency related to the purchase of new military equipment is to fill the gaps resulting from the transfer of military equipment from the resources of the Polish Army to Ukraine (including: T-72 tanks, some PT-91
Twardy tanks , self-propelled howitzers ( AHS)
Krab ) by the end of 2025 and the planned increase in the size of the Polish Armed Forces (including an increase in the number of units).
Tanks
The already announced acquisition of 116 used American M1A1 SA
Abrams tanks (two battalions) is to be completed in 2023-2024.
The Korean tanks from the K2 Black Panther family in three variants are to complement the
Abrams tanks in the Polish Armed Forces :
- K2: 180 (3 battalions) of newly produced tanks, delivered from South Korea in 2022-2025 for the T-72 and PT-91 tanks delivered to Ukraine. After 2026, these tanks are to be upgraded to the K2PL version.
- K2PL: 820 units (14 battalions) adapted to the Polish requirements of K2 tanks, the deliveries of which are to start in 2026. These tanks are to be produced in a new factory built in Poland and partly in South Korea. The vehicles are to be characterized by: reinforced armor, omnidirectional observation system, hard-kill ASOP (KAPS) active defense system.
- K3PL (contractual name): a new Polish-Korean tank of the future, developed on the basis of the K2PL tank, which will be produced in Poland and South Korea.
Cannon howitzers
The contract for the supply of four division fire modules (DMO)
Regina , including 96 self-propelled howitzers (AHS)
Krab , concluded in December 2016, will be continued until around 2025 due to an additional AHS
Krab order for Ukraine (the original planned completion date of the contract with 2016 is 2024). In 2022, it is planned to sign a new contract for the supply of two DMO
Regina (including 48 AHS
Krabs ) with production in the years 2025-2026. Together with the AHS
Krab order for Ukraine, this will ensure full load on the AHS production capacity currently owned by Huta Stalowa Wola SA Production of AHS
Krabit is also expected to continue after 2026 until the new generation Polish-Korean AHS is developed. The AHS
Krab in the Polish Armed Forces will be complemented by Korean AHS from the K9 family in three varieties:
- K9A1: 48 units (2 squadrons), mostly newly produced AHS, delivered from South Korea in 2022-2023 (including 18 in 2022) for AHS Krab delivered to Ukraine. The acquired AHS K9A1 is to be retrofitted with the TOPAZ control and command system from the beginning, and then it is planned to upgrade them to the K9PL version (after around 2026).
- K9PL: 624 pieces (26 squadrons) Polonized version of AHS K9A2 equipped with incl. into the TOPAZ command and control system. The first tranches will probably be produced on the basis of the AHS K9A1, but the next ones are to be based on the K9A2 version. Deliveries of this version are expected to start in 2024 and will be AHS manufactured in South Korea. From 2026, AHS K9PL production is to begin in a new factory built in Poland. From that moment on, deliveries will be made from both the Polish and Korean production lines.
- K9PLA3 (contractual name, new generation AHS, "Krab 2"): a new, future-oriented Polish-Korean AHS developed on the basis of research and development works started in 2025-2026, based on the experience with AHS K9PL and AHS Krab . This version is to be produced in Poland and South Korea.
The Borsuk is to be the basic new generation infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) in the Polish Armed Forces . The military's needs for its deliveries are determined at the level of over 1,000 combat versions (and even 1,400 units), plus vehicles in specialized versions (on the same chassis).
The Borsuk IFV , as floating vehicles, are to be used by mechanized battalions cooperating with the
Leopard 2 A5 / PL and K2 / K2PL tank battalions. In the case of mechanized battalions cooperating with tank battalions equipped with M1
Abrams tanks , the possibility of acquiring Korean heavy AS21
Redback IFVs in the longer term (next week there will be no contract) is being analyzed.. However, there are no plans to acquire Korean K21 floating IFVs. When ordering the IFV AS21, it is possible to use the Polish unmanned ZSSW-30 turret on them.
Wheeled armored personnel carriers
According to the information provided, the license for the production of Rosomak wheeled armored personnel carriers in Poland will expire in 2023 . In order to ensure his successor, there are, inter alia, talks with South Korea about the possibility of obtaining a license for the production in Poland of APCs developed by the Korean industry.
Multiple rocket launchers
Later this year, a new order is planned for the supply of further WR-40 Langusta multi-lead rocket launchers . Additionally, irrespective of an inquiry to the United States regarding the acquisition of 500 M142 HIMARS launchers, talks are underway with South Korea regarding the possibility of acquiring WWR K239
Chunmoo under the
Homar program . They can partially be an alternative to the M142 HIMARS launchers or it is possible to obtain both types of WWR, in a total of 500 launchers.
Combat planes
In order to achieve bridging capacity for the Su-22 and MiG-29 planes, it is planned to purchase 48 FA-50PL light combat aircraft. It is to be a version similar to the FA-50 Block 20 version being developed by KAI (Korea Aerospace Industries), with AESA radar,
Sniper optoelectronic storage , AIM-9X
Sidewinder air-to-air missilesand the Link 16 communication system. It is only in the longer term that it is possible to integrate this version of the FA-50 with a medium-range air-to-air missile (eg AIM-120 AMRAAM). All deliveries are planned to be completed in 2023, with 12 aircraft in the current FA-50 Block 10 version being delivered first, followed by 36 aircraft in the FA-50PL version. Upon completion of deliveries, the first 12 aircraft are to be upgraded to the FA-50PL version. It is expected that a training center with simulators and a service center will be built in Poland by around 2026. Before deciding on the order, Polish pilots were already flying FA-50 aircraft in South Korea.
Interestingly, Colonel Płatek also mentioned that the Polish Ministry of Defense is also interested in the possibility of acquiring the new generation KF-21
Boramae multi-role combat aircraft (WSB) in the future . It is worth recalling that, irrespective of the purchase of light FA-50PL aircraft, the Technical Modernization Plan for 2021-2035 still includes the task of acquiring another two WSB squadrons.
