Ukrainan konflikti/sota

Mites tuo Horlivka on niin tuttu? Jotain tapahtumia seurattu sieltä silloin kuin Putinin porukat laajensi aluetta.
Itselleni se on jäänyt mieleen parhaiten tästä Simon Ostrovskyn raportista Vice Newsille. Oli aikanaan mielestäni kaikkein mielenkiintoisin uutislähde, mitä Ukrainan konfliktista oli saatavilla. Jotenkin aidon elämän makuista raportointia suoraan paikanpäältä.

Simonin raportithan taisivat alkaa Krimiltä, missä tyyppi mm. ujuttautui "vihreiden miesten" piirittämään ukrainalaisten tukikohtaan. Journalismia parhaimmillaan.

Key Points
  • A second round is very likely to be required in the 2019 presidential election with no one candidate gaining over 50% in the first round; The second round is likely to involve former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and/or incumbent President Petro Poroshenko, or a new candidate currently not involved in politics.
  • Substantial policy changes are likely if Tymoshenko wins the presidency, especially affecting the construction, infrastructure, banking, and energy sectors.
  • Military escalation in the Donbass conflict zone is likely prior to the election as any military successes would boost Poroshenko's prospects.
  • Poroshenko's ability to proceed to the second round currently appears to require the combination of no non-political candidates being nominated and increased budget spending being granted to public-sector workers and pensioners.

Kaaheen laakeeta aakeeta. Hirvittää ajatus sotimisesta tuossa maastossa.

Vastineeksi mistä? Ei voi kuin ihmetellä republikaanien nykymenoa.
No eivät tuon republikaanidelegaation kaikki jäsenet tainneet ihan samaa linjaa edustaa.

Washington (CNN)Sen. John Kennedy told Russian government officials to "stop screwing with our election" on a congressional visit to Russia last week, the Louisiana Republican told CNN on Monday.

Speaking on CNN's "At This Hour with Kate Bolduan," Kennedy said he warned Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Congress will "double down on sanctions ... if you screw with the elections this fall."

This was despite Lavrov's denial of any Russian interference with elections, which Kennedy "expected."
Even though Kennedy thought Lavrov to be a "bully" and "belligerent," the senator thought his message "was delivered."

"I went (to Russia) to ... deliver a message ... to the foreign minister, to the speaker of the house, and to a number of their senators," he said.

The message was "stop screwing with American elections ... get out of eastern Ukraine and let them self-determine ... get out of Crimea and let Crimea self-determine ... stop screwing around in Syria and help us settle the mess. And ... do not allow Iran to get a foothold in southern Syria, because if you do that, there's going to be another war that Israel's not going to stand for."

Meeting with Russian government officials also helped inform Kennedy's perception of the political system there.

"People ask, 'what sort of political system do they have?' It's all about Putin. They don't have a political philosophy. I mean, what's the political philosophy of the mafia?" he said.

"The last time the Russian government embraced Western values and democracy was never," Kennedy said. "We're not going to convert their political leadership. We're going to have to contain them."

Kennedy was joined by fellow Republican lawmakers Sens. Steve Daines, John Hoeven, Jerry Moran, Richard Shelby, John Thune and Rep. Kay Granger on the July 4 visit.

This visit occurs at an especially key time -- before President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin's face-to-face meeting next week, for which Kennedy's expectations are "low."

He reiterated, "You're not going to be able to convert Putin. You're going to have to contain him."

Ukraine's law enforcers identity 54 foreign mercenaries fighting on side of "DPR/LPR" in Donbas

Most of them are Italians, but there are also Frenchmen, Spaniards, Serbs, Finns, Czechs and even one U.S. citizen.

The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) of Ukraine says the law enforcers have identified 54 foreign mercenaries who have taken part in hostilities against Ukraine in Donbas on the side of the so-called "DPR" and "LPR" (the self-proclaimed "Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics").

Kyiv wants to use this information to prove the fact of Russia's waging of war in Donbas and financing of terrorism internationally, the PGO told journalists, as reported by the Ukrainian-language service of Germany's Deutsche Welle (DW).

In early July, Ukraine's Chief Military Prosecutor Anatoliy Matios told TV Channel 112 Ukraine that the PGO over the four years of the war in Donbas had identified more than 50 foreigners fighting on the side of the militants from the "DPR" and "LPR."

Most of them are Italians, but there are also Frenchmen, Spaniards, Serbs, Finns, Czechs and even one U.S. citizen. Kyiv has sent the list of them to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC in The Hague did not comment on the reports by Matios, referring to regulations of confidentiality, stipulated in the Rome Statute.

The PGO's statement demonstrates that Ukraine is suing Russia in two courts, namely the International Criminal Court and the UN International Court of Justice, with which Ukraine has already lodged a relevant lawsuit, the publication wrote.

Expert from Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law Matthias Hartwig told journalists that it would not be easy to prove Russia's guilt at the ICC for war against Ukraine.

He says it is problematic because Russia has not ratified the Rome Statute, which regulates the issue. That is, Russia's leader who orders to invade cannot be brought to justice in court. Unless, of course, the UN Security Council takes a respective decision, but this is impossible.

Moreover, it is virtually impossible to bring foreign mercenaries to justice through international courts, according to the expert. Only aggressive war, serious war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity are the grounds for considering a claim at the ICC. But so far, there are no decisions by the ICC on the Donbas war.

Venäläistoimittaja Arkadi Babtshenkon murha lavastettiin, jotta Ukrainan tiedustelupalvelu saisi haltuunsa tappolistan, jolla on 47 nimeä, kertoo BBC.

Babtshenko olisi todella saattanut kuolla ilman entistä ortodoksipappia Oleksiy Tsymbaliukia.Tsymbaliuk esittäytyy BBC:n laajassa haastattelussa Babtshenkon palkkamurhaajaksi – ja naureskelee päälle.

USAn senaatissa esitetty uusia sanktioita.
