US continues to spy on Israel
The Wall Street Journal reported that Obama directed the NSA to continue spying on Netanyahu even after the Snowden affair, increasing with the Iran deal.
The reported double spy action -- the US on Israel and Israel on the US should not harm US - Israel relations, since the relations are terrible already and such is the nature of power. The US is simply allowed to do things that Israel cannot. A recent Wall Street Journal report stated that President Barak Obama continued to eavesdrop on Prime Minister Netanyahu even after the Snowden affair was exposed in which it was revealed that Obama was wiretapping leaders around the world.
The US monitoring of Israel is increased when there is a fear that Israel will attack Iran or expose direct channels of discussion between the US and Iran. US Department spokesman John Kirby attempted to allay Israel's fears. A senior Israeli official stated, "We were not surprised, we were prepared for this. We are cautious."
The Wall Street Journal reported that Obama directed the NSA to continue spying on Netanyahu even after the Snowden affair, increasing with the Iran deal. A Senior American official told the Wall Street Journal, "Due to the great interest in Netanyahu's intentions during the negotiations between Iran and the US, the NSA attempted to send info to US policy makers in a rapid, ongoing fashion -- often within 6 hours of intercepting conversations." Minister Yuval Steinitz, former Minister of Intelligence stated, "We are not spies and we do not wiretap anyone in the US. We would expect the same courtesy of the Americans, but we are not surprised."
So, although Barak promised not to wiretap allies like Angele Merkle, Netanyahu remained fair game. The report is based on interviewing 30 former intelligence workers who testified that the 8200 Israeli intelligence unit and the NSA collaborated in many instances and even spied on each other. In one case, the Israelis gave the US a technological tool for spying.
It turned out that the Israelis had actually used this tool for spying on the Americans. Israel claimed it was a mistake. Perhaps Netanyahu suspected he was under surveillance. After all, he managed to hide his scheduled speech in Congress. Only the former Speaker of the House, John Boehner and Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer knew about it.
