Uutisia Saudi-Arabiasta

Jamal Khashoggi was strangled as soon as he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, then his body dismembered and disposed of in a premeditated killing, the city’s chief prosecutor has said in the first official confirmation of how the Saudi journalist died.

The statement further undermines Saudi claims he was killed after a fight broke out in the consulate, where he had arrived to collect documents for his upcoming wedding.

It comes on the heels of the Saudi chief prosecutor’s departure from Istanbul and underlines how little co-operation there has been so far in what is supposedly a joint Turkish-Saudi investigation.

The prosecutor, Irfan Fidan, said in his statement that discussions this week with his Saudi counterpart, Saud al-Mojeb, had yielded “no concrete result”.

It also suggests that the steady drip of information about the crime leaked or released by Turkish officials so far will continue and there is more evidence to table.

The body of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi was “dissolved” after his murder and dismemberment at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, an adviser to the Turkish president has said.

“We now see that it wasn’t just cut up; [the Saudi suspects] got rid of the body by dissolving it,” Yasin Aktay, an adviser to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and an official in Turkey’s ruling party, told the newspaper Hurriyet on Friday.

“According to the latest information we have, the reason they cut up the body is it was easier to dissolve it. They aimed to ensure no sign of the body was left,” said Aktay, who was a friend of the dissident Saudi writer. “Killing an innocent person is one crime, the treatment and extent of what was done to the body is another crime and dishonour.”

The remarks represented the first official statement from a Turkish authority about what allegedly happened to Khasoggi’s body. Turkish investigators have been trying to determine whether Khashoggi’s remains could have been dissolved in acid at the nearby consul general’s house.

An unnamed official also told the Washington Post “biological evidence” in the consulate’s garden suggested that because of acid “Khashoggi’s body was not in need of burying”.

Huuhaata?

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told the US he considered murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be a dangerous Islamist, media reports say.

Prince Mohammed's reported phone call to the White House came before Saudi Arabia admitted he had been killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Prince Mohammed said Khashoggi had been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist organisation, the Washington Post reported.

Although he later stopped attending meetings of the Brotherhood, he remained conversant in its conservative, Islamist and often anti-Western rhetoric, which he could deploy or hide depending on whom he was seeking to befriend.

Years later, after American commandos killed Bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011, Mr. Khashoggi mourned his old acquaintance and what he had become.

“I collapsed crying a while ago, heartbroken for you Abu Abdullah,” Mr. Khashoggi wrote on Twitter, using Bin Laden’s nickname. “You were beautiful and brave in those beautiful days in Afghanistan, before you surrendered to hatred and passion.”

Experts, images indicate Saudis are at work on a ballistic missile program
Researcher says missiles could act as a ‘reasonable hedge’ in case Saudi Arabia doesn’t receive US support in attack on Iranian targets

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A military base deep inside Saudi Arabia appears to be testing and possibly manufacturing ballistic missiles, experts and satellite images suggest, evidence of the type of weapons program it has long criticized its arch-rival Iran for possessing.
Further raising the stakes for any such program are comments by Saudi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who said last year the kingdom wouldn’t hesitate to develop nuclear weapons if Iran does. Ballistic missiles can carry nuclear warheads to targets thousands of kilometers (miles) away.
Officials in Riyadh and the Saudi Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.

A six-year-old boy was beheaded in front of his screaming mum in Saudi Arabia for belonging to the wrong branch of Islam, according to reports.

The child and his mum were allegedly approached while visiting a shrine to the Prophet Muhammad in Medina and asked if they were Shia Muslims.

The mum reportedly said yes and several minutes later a car pulled up beside them and the child was snatched away from her.

The boy - named locally as Zakaria Al-Jaber - was repeatedly stabbed in the neck with a piece of broken glass until he was beheaded, it is claimed.

His helpless mum could only watch and scream as the horror unfolded.

Saudi Arabia's predominant branch of Islam is Sunni, accounting for around three quarters of the population.

Human rights groups say practitioners of other forms of the faith - including Shia - are persecuted.

Shia Rights Watch, a Washington DC-based campaign group, said: "There was no intervention from anyone and no response from authority thus far.

"The Saudi Shia community came together in mourning and to show solidarity with the parents.

"The community also reported this incident is a result of ongoing violations and lack of protection by the Saudi authority toward its Shia population.

"Saudi Shia have been under military crackdown by their government and many Shia are in prisons and on death toll."

Pakistanilaiset senaattorit ovat vierailulla Saudi-Arabiassa ja antoivat kruununprinssi Mohammad bin Salmanille osuvan lahjan, kullatun MP-5:n.

It's not unusual for dignitaries to receive gifts during visits to foreign countries -- perhaps a Cuban cigar or a bottle of French wine.

But a delegation of Pakistani senators sprang a surprise Monday during a visit by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the country, presenting him with a gold-plated gun.

The Heckler & Koch MP5 is a submachine gun developed by German engineers, and this modified weapon has an elaborate pattern engraved on its gold-plated components.

Lawmakers also gave the crown prince, commonly known as MBS, a portrait of himself, a source at the senate told CNN.

Presenting MBS with a weapon will likely raise eyebrows at a time when the crown prince has been embroiled in controversy over the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered at the country's consulate in Istanbul in October of last year.

US intelligence officials have said the killing could not have been carried out without bin Salman's knowledge. Saudi authorities have repeatedly denied that MBS knew anything about the operation.

MBS traveled to Pakistan at the start of an Asian tour widely seen as an attempt to bolster ties and improve the kingdom's image after a troubled year.

Islamabad went to great lengths to welcome bin Salman, honoring his arrival with a 21-gun salute and a fly-past by the country's air force. A massive security operation was also launched, with the capital's air space shut down and schools and all government institutions closed Monday.

MBS signed agreements worth $20 billion during his two-day visit to the country, the first since he became crown prince in 2017.

India was the next stop on bin Salman's tour. On Wednesday, he visited New Delhi, announcing plans to share intelligence to fight terrorism and make further investments in the country.

Next up is China, Saudi Arabia's largest trading partner, with Riyadh's exports to Beijing worth $46 billion in 2018.

MBS and President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss cooperation on China's One Belt, One Road trade and infrastructure initiative, as well as MBS' Saudi Vision 2030 plan, which aims to reduce unemployment, grow the private sector and develop industrial, tourism and entertainment hubs over the next decade.
