F-35A Lightning IIs Arrive in Bulgaria

Two U.S. F-35 Lightning II aircraft and Airmen arrived in Bulgaria, today, from Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England as part of a deployment that enhances the region’s ability to host the aircraft for future deployments and operations.

“This deployment clearly demonstrates our nation's contribution to the security and collective defense here in Europe,” said General Curtis Scaparrotti, Commander, U.S. European Command. “It shows we are serious about territorial integrity and will defend our interests with the most advanced capabilities our nation has to offer.”

These movements were planned in advance and in close coordination with the Bulgarian government

MADL ja Link 16 on tehty hivenen eri tarkoituksiin, täydentävät lähinnä toisiaan. Check. Link 16 on jo iäkäs järjestelmä, milloin tulisi uutta?

Artikkelissa se suuri ongelma on F-22:n ja F-35:n keskinäisen viestinnän vaikeus, jota ei ole vieläkään ratkaistu. :facepalm:

Niin, tämä asiaintila ei ole F-35:n tai MADL:n syytä.
 
Eikös F-35:ssa niin kuin kaikissa muissakin normi hävittäjissä ole ihan luonnostaan aika rajoittuneet EW kyvyt? Häirintä spectrihän on vain x alueella siinä missä Growlerilla se käsittää myös muut alueet. Mitä itse olen lukenut niin kehittynyttä vihollista vastaan sodittaessa vaaditaan laajan spectrin häirintä kykyä. Eli niitä oikeita EW koneita.

No, siinä tapauksessa ainoat kehittynyttä vihollista vastaan taistelemaan kykenevät pumput ovat Yhdysvaltain laivasto ja Australian ilmavoimat. Keneltäkään muulta ei nimittäin löydy elektroniseen sodankäyntiin erikoistuneita hävittäjiä.

Mitä tulee F-35:een, on viitteitä siitä että koneesta löytyy jonkinlaista kykyä myös matalampia taajuuksia vastaan (linkattu myös tähän ketjuun), ja toisaalta on myös aiheellista kysyä, vaatiiko se ylipäätään samanlaista häirintätukea kuin "normaalit" koneet. Niin tai näin, Growlerissä käytettävän AN/ALQ-99:n korvaava NGJ tulee saataville myös F-35:een.

No... x-spektrin häirinnällä saa just ne tutkaohjukset pois pelistä. Sekä käytännössä kaikki hävittäjien tutkat.

"House and Senate appropriators are concerned the F-35 joint program office is not awarding contracts for the jets they fund each year "in a timely manner" and are pointing to the program executive officer's contracting strategy as the problem."

Eräs mahdollinen selitys tälle voi olla, että JPO ohjaa hävittäjien valmistamiseen korvamerkittyjä rahoja kehitysohjelman pyörittämiseen ja näin JPO voi vuodesta toiseen väittää, että he ovat "on budget", mitä he todellisuudessa eivät ole.

"The language highlights tension between Congress and the JPO over program reporting requirements. A congressional source told Inside Defense last month the program has yet to submit a report required by the FY-17 National Defense Authorization Act that would include key cost and time lines for Block 4 follow-on modernization as well as annual funding profiles for development and procurement. The report was due March 31."

"For the past few years, Lawmakers have reduced funding for Block 4 due to a lack of clarity on its requirements. The program finally completed a capability development document, which the Joint Requirements Oversight Committee approved in March, after a nearly 15-month delay, but the new appropriations bill proposes a $160 million cut to Block 4 -- $76 million from the Air Force's budget request, $44.5 million from the Navy's and $40 million from the Marine Corps'. Tämä on linjassa Gilmoren viimeisen raportin kanssa, Blokki neloselta puuttuu realistinen aikataulu ja rahoitus. GAO:n mukaan 3F tulee myöhästymään ja tarvitsee lisärahoitusta.

The F-35 program office is looking at adding capacity for another AIM-120 AMRAAM radar-guided air-to-air missile in each of the jet’s two weapons bays, increasing internal—and thus stealthy—missile loadout by 50 percent, program director Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan said March 22. Speaking with reporters after his speech at a McAleese/Credit Suisse conference in Washington, D.C., Bogdan said, “There is potential … to add a third missile on each side.”

The upgrade would likely be part of the Block IV program of F-35 enhancements, but “that’s something I know the services and all the partners” are interested in. Bogdan said this would not require some special version of AMRAAM, but “the same AMRAAM missiles that we carry today, just an extra one; probably on the weapons bay door.”

Retired US Marine Corps Maj. Dan Flatley will never forget the crushing feeling of helplessness he felt the first time he faced a stealth jet while he was flying in an F/A-18.

"I remember indelibly the moment in which the AWAC (airborne early warning and control plane) called out to me that there was a Raptor [an F-22 stealth fighter] in front of me at very close range that made me uncomfortable,"

"I had no way of targeting him, no way of defending myself."

Years later, Flatley would come to pilot the F-35 and even design the curriculum for training pilots in the fifth-generation fighter, where he would tap into the crushing psychological effect of fighting a plane you can't find.

"What the public doesn't realize is how dominant the difference in information is," said Flatley. While the F-35 performs similarly to legacy jets in some areas like speed, turning, and range, there's a huge, ever-growing information gap between what the F-35 pilot sees and what an F-18 pilot sees.

Legacy jets, with the help of AWACs "may have a general idea that there's an F-35 out there, but they don't know exactly where we are," said Flatley.

The distinct information disadvantage causes pilots to get tunnel vision, according to Flatley.

"Everything they see becomes the F-35 out there," said Flatley. "Every radar hit, every communication is about the stealth jet. They want to illuminate or eliminate a threat they can't handle."

The fear and paranoia caused by the presence of stealth jets in a battle has a widespread effect on adversaries that "includes extremely capable legacy jets and certainly includes everything available to adversaries,"

"I've seen guys in F-18s turn directly in front of me and show me their tails cause they have no idea I'm there."
