We Flew Red Air against F-22 Raptors, F-35 Lightning IIs, Rafales and Typhoons in Atlantic Trident ’17. Here’s How It Went.

Red Air would utilize dissimilar threats against Blue Air coming from a multitude of directions and altitudes. The Talons and Strike Eagles primary goal: to find the Blue Air strikers (call sign “Rogue”), fight through the escorts to get within an effective (emulated) missile envelope and realize a kill. However, even if a visual on a Raptor or Lightning II was realized (and Red Air had the radar capability) they would still be “chasing a mirage” and could not expect to get a lock. Great.
Some may ask, “What is it like to fly adversary against the most lethal integrated fighter force on the planet?” My answer, “You just die. Sight unseen. You just die.”

Saabillahan on jo tuote siihen jota on myyty 3 kpl.

Kyse oli Gripen A:sta

Aaargh

"Red Air understood that Blue Air was tasked with a strike mission (target location unknown to Red Air) using the Rafale and Raptor as strikers. While some might think the F-35As should have been the strikers, Raptor was the word and Raptors do have a very effective strike capability. The rest of Blue Air, Typhoons and Lightning IIs (and perhaps a mix of Raptors) were flying escort protecting the strikers."

USAFin helkkarin kovat suorityskykyvaatimuksethan tipputtivat halppisvaihtoehdot pois pelistä, ruotsalaisia eivät vaan taida tuollaiset kiinnostaa, niiden kautta kun tulonsiirto Wallenbergeille on vaikeampi toteuttaa...

Noista valinnoista ja huijauksista tuli mieleen tämä hassu juttu jossa maallikkoa vedetään 10 cm narulla.

Ei välttämättä kannata laittaa yksinvaltiasta valitsemaan

Thirty minutes to choose your fighter jet: how the Shah of Iran chose the F-14 Tomcat over the F-15 Eagle
Feb 11 2013 - 43 Comments
IRIAF-F-14.jpg

By Dario Leone
Despite all the skepticism about the actual airworthiness of Iran’s new stealth fighter “Qaher 313”, one thing is certain: Iran is still flying the iconic Grumman F-14.

More than 6 years after its last flight with the U.S. Navy, the Tomcat is still in service in a small number of examples with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF), to such an extent, Iran has recently tested a brand new air-to-air missile dubbed “Fakour”, for the combat plane made famous by Top Gun.

In fact, 80 F-14s were ordered by the Shah and 79 were effectively delivered. The procurement of the Tomcat to Iran was very important not only for Grumman, which was facing serious cash flow problems due to the difficult development of the aircraft, but also for the future of the fighter itself, since at the time F-14’s program was affected by schedule slippage and cost overruns.

When the Shah announced his intention to replace the old F-4 Phantoms in service with the Imperial Iranian Air Force, it was clear that both the USAF’s new F-15 and the Navy’s F-14 would have had the same opportunity to become Iranian’s main fighter.

So, after briefings held by USAF and Navy personnel in the Shah’s palace in Tehran, Iranian officials decided that it would have been the flight demonstration at Andrews Air Force Base, near Washington DC, scheduled in July 1973, to determine which one between the two fighters, would be the best to satisfy the then Imperial Iranian Air Force’s requiremens.

The flight demonstration was scheduled not to exceed 30 minutes from the first take off to the landing of the second aircraft.

The base was closed for that short time in which at the presence of the Shah, the two U.S. fighters had to fly their demonstration: it was decided that the USAF’s F-15, piloted by Irv Burrows (McDonnell Douglas’ test pilot), would have performed first, while Don Evans and Dennis Romano (Grumman’s test crew) with their F-14, would wait their turn after the Eagle.

While the F-15 taxied onto runway, Don and Dennis started engines of the Tomcat ahead of the schedule and burned down fuel in the warm up area during the Eagle demonstration, to reduce the difference in thrust to weight ratio between the two fighters. However F-15’s demonstration was spectacular, not only for the raw power of the aircraft but also for pilot’s skills: Burrows was a great pilot and that day, he showed all his ability.

The flight demonstration was the same for both aircraft: it consisted in a sequence of maneuvers beginning with a high performance take off followed by an Immelman turn and climb-out, then a descent to a high speed fly-by, two high-g low altitude turns followed by a slow speed fly-by in the landing configuration and last, the landing.

Since the F-15 has a higher thrust to weight ratio than the F-14A, the Eagle performed a really impressive flight profile during which it pulled an incredible 7-g 360 degree turn.

After the F-15 had finished its display, everyone was waiting for the underpowered F-14A demonstration: the Tomcat’s TF-30 engines would have not given to the aircraft the same thrust to weigh ratio of the Eagle.

However, during the F-15’s performance, Evans and Romano burned down a great quantity of fuel and now they had only 2,500 pounds of remaining gas: while this little quantity was only sufficient to accomplish their flight demonstration, 2,500 pounds was also one eight of the Tomcat’s internal fuel capacity and thanks to this fact the Tomcat had the same thrust to weight ratio of the Eagle.

At this point the F-14 had one thing that the F-15 didn’t have: variable geometry wings that would have made the difference for the grace of the flight demonstration.

Don and Dennis pushed both throttles to full zone five afterburner (which was the maximum afterburner thrust setting for TF-30 engine) and took off to perform the same demonstration of the F-15: the sequence of the maneuvers was just like the Eagle’s one, but the Tomcat’s crew, during the knife-edge pass, decided to sweep the wings from fully swept to fully forward and then they executed a turn at the maximum Tomcat’s performance, producing a large cloud of vapor off the wings due to the shock wave.

Then approaching the mid with the wings swept at 40 degrees, the Tomcat went into a full afterburner 360 degree 8 ½ g turn accelerated to 400 knots, very impressive to see. To end the demonstration, Evans and Romano added a touch-and-go landing: when the main landing gears came in touch with the runway they inserted full zone five afterburners and the Tomcat climbed in vertical. At this point, while they had almost ran out of fuel, they made a spectacular carrier landing approach and they fully stopped in one thousand feet of runway.

Once the show ended, the Shah literally ignored the Eagle and walked directly towards the Tomcat speaking for some minutes with the crew still sat in the cockpit of the fighter: he’d chosen the Tomcat, saving the Grumman and assuring a future to the F-14.

Luin ja linkkasin tuonne ilmavoimien tulevaisuuteen jo viime yönä tällaisilla kommenteilla:

On nämä läntiset naapurit vaan aika vekkuleita, taitaa olla flygvapnetilla T-X:n RFI:t näpeissä kun oma konevalinta on jo tehty. Tässä ilmavoimien näkemys seuraavan harjoitushävittäjän valintaan:

But Liljegren made clear that other T-X contenders would probably not be an option for the country.

"If Saab-Boeing will not win, we will not take the aircraft that the U.S. Air Force will go for because it doesn’t make sense in that case.” Then it would pursue a less expensive turboprop plane with a glass cockpit, like the Pilatus PC-21, he said."

" Some of [the T-X competitors] are probably too expensive,” Liljegren said, declining to elaborate."

https://imgur.com/a/kxQuf

Eli eduskunnan pitäisi tietää F-35 ylläpidon hinta välittömästi.
Sitten parin lauseen päässä se onkin jo jätkällä itsellään "tiedossa". 60-80 miljardia... justiinsa. Kanada perui oston tietenkin kustannuksien takia.

Thirty minutes to choose your fighter jet: how the Shah of Iran chose the F-14 Tomcat over the F-15 Eagle

I was an independent contractor at Grumman, electronics specialist, in 1978 I had an assignment to find and and paint (identify with a laser) the F-14's. The F-14 superiority fighter first flew in December 1970 and made its first deployment in 1974 with the U.S. Navy.

The Air Force General in command of this test, (the Navy was not thrilled by this) wanted to know if two F-14 Tom Cats flying a fleet defensive pattern could detect in a combat situation and neutralize the four F-104 aggressors playing the part of attacking Migs before detection.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, supersonic interceptor aircraft originally developed by Lockheed for the United States Air Force (USAF). First flight ‎: ‎17 February 1956. The modifications for the F-104 included removal of the radar system and radios.

I requested off the shelf automotive radar detectors that were modified to a specific frequency. Radios were Citizen band, also modified for a specific band and passive direction finders. From information of other test, my assumption and plan was to come in as low and as fast as possible and then turn up using the incredible thrust of the F-104. Luckily the General came up with 4 experienced F-104 pilots who obviously knew how to control the "Widow Maker" one of the nicknames the F-104.

Since we were doing this in the desert at the high noon I knew that the background noise created by the suns reflection would help mask the exhaust noise and the bright sun would also mask it being seen against the sand.
The simple no radiation replacement for the radios and the passive radar detector provided enough stealth along with the low profile of the F-104 were enough to splash the 2 Tomcats.

In today's world with the technology for sensing the F-14 in the air would be as easy to find as if it had a giant balloon saying shoot here. Even in its heyday it was real easy to find. I know And no I will not divulge how we did it. Some secrets are for ever.

Yksikön miehistölle on myönnetty kunniamerkkejä yms.
Tällöin ei ole mitään tarvetta laittaa Putleria poliisin rekistereihin, näin Suomikin myöntää epävirallisesti tämän erikoisyksikön luonteen.

Oletteko päässeet tulokseen siitä, mikä konemalli pitää hankkia korvaamaan poistumassa oleva suorituskyky? Miten arvioitte ns. lähialueen kaluston kehittymistä, mikä vempele vastaa teknisiä vaatimuksia sanotaan nyt vaikka 2040?

Voisin kuvitella vaatimuksien olevan 2040-luvulla sellaisia, ettei mikään kone niitä nykytilassaan täytä, mutta asianmukaisesti päivitettynä kenties useampikin konemalli siihen pystyy.
Arvioin myös ettei julkisesti saatavilla oleva tieto ole alkuunkaan riittävää konemallin valitsemiseen, joten jätän sen ilmavoimille, joilla on noin 4 vuotta aikaa miettiä oikeaa vastausta.
