Re Javelin versus Spike. Again, so much ill informed crap has been written on this thread.
I am not a soldier. However, I have had briefings both on and off the record on both systems. I have fired both using training simulators and made a mess of it each time. Well, I am not a soldier. Both ATGMs are superb. Both have advantages over the other..
I was lucky enough to attend the presentation in London where the Finnish Armed Forces declares the Spike the winner of their competitive evaluation of Spike, Javelin et al. The presentation went into excruciating detail as to why Spike won. In essence, it offers the choice of true fire and forget and man in the loop operation, which Javelin doesn't. In addition, Spike was seen as easier to operate, had better embedded training software and had a simple, lightweight but sturdy tripod. Thermal sights, seeker capabilities etc, were seen as directly comparable.
Advantages of the Javelin were a lower firing signature, and a missile that was somewhat faster than the Spike. Significant advantages, but ones which the Finns felt were outweighed by the man in the loop option offered by Spike.
