Tässäkin ketjussa useammalla suulla aina toisinaan vaadittu mm.
Very interesting conversation with a senior figure from Ukraine's defence ministry this morning, largely discussing Western military assistance and the progress of the war. Key takeaway; what you have sent is great, and we're extremely grateful, but it's not enough.
Western towed howitzers like the M777 - extremely capable equipment. Self propelled howitzers like the CAESAR and the AHS Krab - even better. They have been incredibly effective at striking into the Russian deep rear and executing counter-battery fire. They need more.
This is because self propelled guns can operate close to the front lines; being more mobile and offering more protection for the crews than towed systems. They also need more precision guided munitions for their 155mm guns. The M982 Excalibur has been particularly effective.
The recently given date of delivery for the German and Dutch Panzerhaubitze 2000 systems of 22nd June seems "realistic". The Ukrainians learn to use news very quickly, the crews are highly motivated, and generally pretty tech savvy.
They've been very effective at using their Soviet-era legacy air defence systems to create their own "no fly zone" over Ukraine. But supplies are limited - need Western systems. Points out that such systems are inherently defensive in nature, why the reluctance to supply?
He understands that Western democracies move slowly in some regards. But from his perspective when the West prevaricates in sending systems they're eventually going to seen anyway, more Ukrainians needlessly die.
Points out how grateful Ukraine is to the UK, the US, Poland, and the Baltic States particularly, but also to everyone that has sent arms and support to Ukraine. Hopes the upcoming visit of Macron, Scholz, and Draghi to Kyiv will encourage more support from their countries.
Bottom line - what has been sent is great, but we need more, and we need it faster. They're absolutely convinced at every level of Ukrainian society they're going to win this war, they just understandably want to pay the lowest cost in Ukrainian lives possible.
