As a result of the accident at the ship repair plant, the only Russian aircraft carrier was almost lost ”, which says that on the night of October 30, 2018, an accident occurred in Murmansk on the PD-50 floating dock of the SRZ-82 ship-repair plant, in which at that moment there was a heavy aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov". As a result of the accident, the dock sank, several people were injured. Details and exact extent of damage are still being established.
What happened
At the moment, the most-cited version of the events states that the accident occurred during the planned withdrawal of Kuznetsov from the dock and was caused by a power failure, which caused the pumps pumping water from the tanks to stop, and, as a result, the dock was flooded. Alexey Rakhmanov, President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), also puts forward a similar interpretation of events. He stressed that the work of the ballasting system went abnormally when removing from the dock. “In view of our colleagues, a sudden power outage from the shore. This led to an uncontrolled dive of one of the dock towers, which led to a significant roll, ”he said.
At the same time, Rossetti told Izvestia that there were no shutdowns at the ship repair plant in Murmansk. What really happened
According to the Izvestia correspondent, from sources in the ship repair industry, the aircraft carrier’s withdrawal from the dock was not planned and when the PD-50 began to sink, the ship was on the dock’s deck, not being ready to leave.
The prerequisite for the accident was indeed problems with power supply, however, the dock did not switch to its own power, since the PD-50 motor team was reduced, and the fuel for diesel generators was not purchased.
According to sources, Kuznetsova was rescued by the well-coordinated work of the crew remaining onboard during the repair, which in due time began the struggle for survivability and saved the ship from being flooded, despite the flow of water through the open outboard fittings and holes made during the repair. As a result, the ship remained afloat. The crew of the Kuznetsov also organized the rescue of the dock crew. As a result, the aircraft carrier, having received several thousand tons of water, was towed to the berth of the 35th shipyard - to its usual place of anchorage.
During the flooding dock tilted, which led to the fall of the crane on the deck of the aircraft carrier. Main reasons

How quickly the dock can be replaced is unclear. PD-50 was once built by order of the Soviet Union in Sweden. In Russia, such an order can technically fulfill several plants today, but the price of the issue and the timing of construction have not been discussed yet.
In any case, it is obvious that the failure to fulfill the long-discussed plans for the modernization of Sevmash in Severodvinsk and the lack of a dry dock in the Kola Bay threaten the combat capability of the Navy.
How the night event will affect the repair schedules of the Northern Fleet, in which PD-50 has always occupied one of the main places, it remains only to guess.
